Effect of growth environment on development of Zea x Tripsacum
hybrid kernels

Our experiments were aimed at clarifying the exact relationship between response to mutagens and mutability of corn lines and their compatibility with Tripsacum dactyloides L. (MNL 65:72, 79, 1991).
The lines resistant to mutagen effects (R) demonstrate complete incompatibility regardless of environment (Table 1). A great environmental effect on the rate of hybrid kernel development proves typical in the lines of moderate resistance (MR) and in the susceptible lines (S) in particular. The better the environment is during the vegetation period, the greater the percent of developed kernels per ear. Line Ig57 appears to be an expected exception. It shows a high value and relative stability of the trait. Probably the distinct relationship between mutability, response to mutagens and compatibility only manifests in a favourable environment (1989). In case of unfavourable conditions it partially (1990, 1992) or completely (1991) changes because of the different adaptability of the lines.
