Noncupulate cob associated with soft outer female glumes

Because the trait for a non-cupulate cob selected by Galinat is deficient in the outer vascular system, the development of the outer glume is not supplemented by an additional source of energy (photosynthate). The result is that it remains soft and similar to the other floral bracts in texture. Its phenotype may appear similar to that of a weak expression of the papyrescent gene (Pn on 7L) as well as similar to some of the oldest known specimens of archaeological cobs.
