The Effect of GA3 on Corngrass (Cg)

An attempt was made to normalize corngrass (Cg) plants using gibberellins as reported by N.H. Nickerson (Am. J. Bot. 47:809-15). The dosage and application schedule followed Nickerson's protocol. GA3 was obtained from Sigma. Plants treated with GA3 had reduced numbers and growth of tillers and their mainstalk was greatly elongated compared to the control. However, out of over 100 treated plants we observed no normal inflorescences. Nickerson reported normal inflorescences resulted from GA treatment. Perhaps the GA solution Nickerson used, in addition to GA3, contained growth regulating substances that induced normal flower development.
