The Uq controlling element system: Change in nomenclature

Due to the prior use of Ub to designate the unbranched tassel gene (see Neuffer, Jones and Zuber, 1968, The Mutants of Maize, Crop Sci. Soc. Amer., Madison, WI), the Ubiquitous-controlling element system (Friedemann and Peterson MNL 54:1) is now identified as the Uq-controlling element system. The regulatory element is designated Uq and the receptor allele, a1-ruq (for the a1 locus). The designation + indicates the absence of Uq.
