Effect of cytoplasm on various maize characters

In six paired comparisons in a double-cross maize hybrid, statistically significant differences between cytoplasms were found for the following characters: plant height, stalk diameter, number of leaves per plant, susceptibility to borers, Ostrinia nubilalis (Hubner) and Heliothis zea (Boddie), yield, stalk lodging, number of ears, grain quality, ear length, germination, and premature plant lodging. These characters represented over 73% of the characters studied.
