Reciprocal crosses between E. perennis and Z. mays were made. A very early maize line (35 days for flowering) was employed for these crosses. Highly heritable earliness was shown in F1 plants, in the one as well as the other cross. F1 plants are vigorous and with about 40 tillers per plant at 12 weeks of growth. The F1 kernels resulting from E. perennis x Z. mays cross (E. perennis as mother) are highly viable, while Z. mays x E. perennis kernels (maize as mother) are little viable, since only three plants were obtained from fifty F1 kernels.
