2. Pbor, an allele at the P locus.

In a strain of orange pericarp and red cob, a plant with grains of orange pericarp and a red base and red cob was observed. Through self‑pollination a homozygous strain for this character was obtained.

Some plants of this character were crossed with plants of orange pericarp and white cob, the others were crossed with plants of colorless pericarp and white cob. In the F1 generation the grains had an orange pericarp, a red base and red cob in both crosses.

The F1 generation of the first group of crosses was outcrossed with plants of orange pericarp and white cob and the second group was outcrossed with plants of a colorless pericarp and white cob.

For the factor for the grain with red base the symbol Pb was used. The following relations of the phenotypes of the above mentioned outcrossed F1 generation were obtained:

(a)

P1 :

Pbor/Pbor

x

P‑ow/P‑ow

F1 :

Pbor/P-ow
