2. In various strains of the Guarany corn of
Paraguay mid‑cob color is frequently associated with a faint purple color
on the pistillate glumes or bracts. The gene responsible for this color is an
allele of Pl and shows linkage
with Y on chromosome 6. In the
presence of B the purple glume
color becomes very intense and is also extended to the leaves and stalks. This
new allele, or another in the series, seems also in certain stocks to be
responsible for the basal glume in the tassel.
