1. Experiments on the inheritance of quantitative characters commenced by Dr. Brieger were continued during the summers of 1936 and 1937. The ultimate aim is to produce varieties of sweet corn which are early enough for the English climate and yet satisfactory in yield. In a comparison of F1 families and their parents it was found that the application of a pseudo-factorial method of analysis (Yates, 1936) is not warranted for field trials with maize. Tho efficiency of the experiment when treated as a 3 x 3 x 3 pseudofactorial arrangement was about 60% of that when treated as a simple randomised block lay-out.
