GENETIC MAPS 2005

PLEASE HELP!

Your inputs and feedback are needed to improve the map placement of genes and to identify genes that can be added (yes, these maps are imperfect and incomplete).

How can you help?

  1. Review these drawings and the Genetic 2005 maps in MaizeGDB and send feedback whenever you have an ‘aha!’ moment (my email address is easy; so is the feedback button in MaizeGDB).
  2. Point out any new data, yours or others’, for genes that are already on these maps or for genes that can be added.
  3. Communicate unpublished data that may be incorporated.
  4. Map new genes, share data in the Newsletter or in publications, and let me know what you know.

All Cooperators thank you for your help!

The accompanying map drawings represent updated locations of genes on the 10 linkage groups. They are drawn from a new, comprehensive tabular update of data for mapped genes, and include 720 genes with map orders and distances. Tabulations are presented in MaizeGDB, accompanied by error estimates, i.e., degrees of precision of placement. Supporting data are given as comments with each mapped locus. Many Cooperators have contributed data used in this compilation. I am grateful for all these contributions, and take credit only for any errors I have made in data transfers or interpretations.

Data were sought locus-by-locus from high-resolution maps and molecular marker mapping whenever they were available. Retrospective data were incorporated selectively from the singular previous compilation of Emerson, Beadle, and Fraser (1935), and from succeeding newsletters and literature. The genes included are so far limited to those represented in The Mutants of Maize on the framework of the UMC 98 RFLP map. Additions of genes, and increased mapping precision for the included genes, are needed. This compilation is intended to be one step toward a documented foundation tied to the genome sequence.

Given the rapid pace at which genes are being cloned and are being mapped, these maps can be expected to be updated with additions and modifications as further data are analyzed and new data become available.
