Placement of vp1 near lg2 on the long arm of chromosome 3

Two +/vp1 ears and four +/+ x +/vp1 ears failed to segregate viviparous kernels after pollination by confirmed +/TB-3Lc plants. All eight ears of +/vp1 x TB-3Ld segregated viviparous grains. Therefore, the vp1 locus must lie between the two translocations in the vicinity of lg2 (see Coe, MNL 54:130). These results confirm Robertson's reports (MNL 27:9 and 39:104) that vp1 is proximal rather than distal to a1.
